THE CHALLENGE
The aim of the Government’s National Programme for IT (NPfIT) is to improve the access and delivery of patient information to healthcare professionals. In the pharmacy market, where Cegedim Rx is the market leader, this means creating a nationwide network capable of making prescriptions available to patients electronically. Already a leading PMR software provider, Cegedim Rx needed the necessary internet and networking technologies to allow pharmacies to connect to the NHS’ New National Network (N3).
THE SOLUTION
Vialtus Solutions is providing Cegedim Rx with the networking capability to roll out the Electronic Prescription Services (EPS) to its customers, as part of a nationwide NHS programme. As the first accredited NHS service provider, Vialtus Solutions provides Cegedim Rx with a secure internet gateway to N3. This means offering its customers DSL-based internet access, which through Cegedim Rx’s PMR software, enables them to send and receive data securely to and from the NHS Spines via the N3 Network. Vialtus also provides Cegedim Rx with managed web hosting, housed at Vialtus’ dual data centres in Manchester and Harbour Exchange. Cegedim Rx provides first line support to pharmacies, helping them to deploy EPS, with Vialtus Solutions providing a managed service and support for all network related issues.
THE RESULTS
The Vialtus N3 solution is vital to enabling Cegedim Rx to deploy EPS to pharmacies. This isn’t an optional business decision, but it is absolutely necessary to enable pharmacies to comply with the NHS’s Connecting for Health initiative. The majority of Cegedim Rx’s customers have signed up to the new service, with many now up and running with the capabilities to dispense prescriptions to customers electronically. The benefits for patients is faster dispensing – particularly repeat prescriptions – and improved security and privacy of their records. For pharmacies, it helps to reduce errors and fraud, as well as secure internet access for e-mail, web browsing and other internet applications. By working with a trusted partner, Cegedim Rx has peace of mind that Vialtus Solutions is always available to keep the network running. In the future, the two companies are looking to collaborate on providing pharmacies with GPRS-based back-up connectivity, unified communications and additional services, such as back-up, at branch level.
